
Curing brake pads is a bit of a tightrope walk. If you crank the heat too fast, the resins basically freak out and volatilize. You end up with internal gas pressure that rips through the material, leaving you with porosity and ugly surface cracks. We found a better way. Instead of relying on those old-school convection ovens, we switched to continuous infrared (IR) curing. It lets us break the heat into zones, so we can actually control the temperature profile. The struggle with the “Skin Effect” Here’s the real headache: the temperature difference between the outside of the pad and the core. In a normal oven, the outside often over-cooks before the middle even gets warm. We use a mix of short-wave and medium-wave IR emitters to push that heat deeper into the friction material. By splitting the process into different heating zones, we can slowly ramp up the temperature. This stops the “skin effect”—that annoying moment where the surface seals shut too early, trapping gases inside and leaving structural holes in your product. Avoiding the shock To stop those cracks from forming, you can’t have sudden spikes in heat. It’s too jarring for the material. We use PID controllers and fast-response pyrometers to tweak the power on the fly. It keeps everything within a tiny window—usually about ±2°C. You have to be careful here. If the heat density is too high, you’ll scorch the phenolic resins. It’s all a balancing act between how much wattage you’re pushing per meter and how fast the conveyor is moving. Too much power early on and you burn the edges. Too little at the end and the core stays raw. The trade-offs The great thing about IR arrays is that they don’t take up nearly as much space as gas ovens. But there’s a catch. That kind of heat density puts a massive strain on your electrical panels. You’ll need to make sure your cabling can handle the high current draw, otherwise, you’re going to deal with voltage drops. And remember, IR is line-of-sight. If your pads are sliding around or aren’t sitting perfectly on the belt, they won’t cure evenly. You can’t skip the proper jigging—it’s the only way to get a consistent finish every single time.
