
Stop Heating the Air: A Better Way to Dry Brake Pads
If you’re still using standard convection ovens for your brake pad coatings, you’re basically paying to heat a giant metal box full of air. It’s slow. The heat takes forever to actually soak into the pad, and because of that, your drying tunnels end up being massive, taking up way too much floor space. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (SWIR). Instead of warming up the air and hoping it reaches the coating, SWIR goes straight for the target. It hits the coating directly. Why this actually matters Shortwave IR works at a higher frequency. In plain English? It digs deeper. Instead of waiting for the heat to slowly crawl from the outside in, the resins and bonding agents in the pad soak up the energy almost instantly. It’s fast. Really fast. Because the cure cycle happens so much quicker, you can actually shrink your tunnel. You get the same quality—or better—but you don’t need a mile of conveyor belt to get there. More pads, less footprint To get that temperature to jump quickly, we use high-wattage quartz lamps. When you have that kind of power density, you can crank up the conveyor speed. Think about it: if you speed up your belt by 30%, you’re pushing 30% more pads through the line every hour. That’s a huge win for your output. One heads-up, though. These arrays pull a lot of power. Before you rip out your old heaters and swap in IR, definitely have someone check your electrical panels and breaker capacity. You don’t want to trip the whole shop. Avoiding the “Skin” Effect Now, you can’t just blast the pads with max heat and call it a day. If you go too hard too fast, you’ll scorch the surface. Or worse, you get “skinning,” where the top layer hardens and traps wet solvents underneath. Not a good look. The trick is zoning. We set up the tunnel so you have high-intensity lamps at the start to give the pads that initial kick, then we switch to lower-wattage lamps for the “soak” phase. It’s a much gentler way to finish the job. At the end of the day, a properly set-up IR system gives you your floor space back and stops you from wasting electricity on hot air.
