
Stop Wasting Space on Your Brake Pad Line
If you’ve spent any time on a production floor, you know the curing stage is usually where everything slows down. Most shops rely on those massive convection ovens. They work, but they’re slow. You’re basically heating up a giant box of air and hoping that heat eventually soaks into the coating. The result? You end up with these ridiculously long tunnel ovens just to make sure the resin is actually cured by the time the parts roll out the other end. It’s a lot of wasted floor space. We’ve found a better way:shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing about shortwave IR—it doesn’t bother with the air. Instead of warming up the room, it shoots energy straight into the coating itself. It’s the difference between waiting for a room to warm up and stepping into a beam of sunlight. The core of the coating hits the right temperature in seconds. Because it’s so fast, you can chop the length of your tunnel way down and still get a perfect cure.
Getting the gear right
When we build these setups, we go with quartz halogen tubes. They put out an intense amount of heat that hits the pads the moment they enter the zone. If you’re picking out your own lamps, keep a close eye on thewattage-per-centimeter. If you want to crank up your belt speed, you’re going to need those higher-wattage tubes to keep up. One pro tip: use reinforced quartz glass. Rapid heating and cooling is brutal on equipment, and standard glass will just crack under the stress. Also, double-check your controllers. These lamps can pull a huge surge of current when they first kick on, and you don’t want to fry your filaments on day one.
The catch (and how to handle it)
Now, IR is powerful, but it can be a bit aggressive. If your belt crawls too slowly or the lamps are sitting too low, you’ll scorch the surface. It happens fast. You have to find that “sweet spot” between the height of the lamps and the speed of your conveyor to get a nice, uniform finish. And just a heads-up: you can’t just swap the lamps and call it a day. Shortwave IR arrays pull a lot more power than a standard fan-driven oven. You’ll probably need to take a look at your electrical panel and maybe pull a few upgrades to handle the extra load.
