Ever wonder why some brake pads just won’t stop that annoying high-pitched squeal? Usually, it comes down to how they were baked. If you’re using old-school convection ovens, you’ve got a problem. The hot air hits the surface first, hardening the outside while the inside is still wet. It traps moisture and gases inside the pad, creating a bunch of internal stress. When that pad hits the road, those inconsistencies cause vibrations. And that’s where the noise comes from. Getting the heat where it actually matters We handle this differently by using shortwave infrared (IR) emitters. Here’s the thing: IR doesn’t waste time heating up the air around the part. Instead, it goes straight for the molecules inside the friction material. It penetrates deep into the bonding layer, meaning the core of the pad heats up at the same speed as the surface. You end up with a solid, consistent bond across the whole thing. The tricky part: Balancing the power To keep the line moving, we use high-wattage quartz lamps. They pump out a ton of radiant energy to get those resins locking together quickly. But you have to be careful with your settings. You’ve got to sync your voltage and wattage with how fast your conveyor is moving. If you blast too much power into a slow line, you’ll scorch the surface before the middle even gets warm. It’s a balancing act. The trade-offs IR curing is fast. Seriously fast. It shreds your cycle times compared to those giant ovens. But it isn’t free. It puts a massive strain on your electrical setup. You’ll need to make sure your wiring and controllers can actually handle the heavy current draw of a full IR bank without tripping a breaker. And a heads-up: these lamps are picky. A single smudge of oil on a quartz tube can create a hot spot that pops the lamp. Keep them spotless, or you’ll be replacing bulbs way more often than you’d like. Once you switch to penetration heating, you’re fixing the problem at the root. The material stays stable, the friction is consistent, and the noise just… disappears.
