
The Real Deal on Carbon Infrared Tubes for Outdoor Heat
Most people think all heating lamps are the same, but there’s a big difference between a basic quartz lamp and a carbon IR tube. Instead of a standard wire, we use a carbon fiber filament tucked inside a quartz shell. The magic here is in the waves. These tubes put out short-to-medium wave radiation. In plain English? The heat actually punches through the air instead of just floating away. That’s why they’re the go-to for those outdoor patio heaters and heavy-duty industrial dryers. Talking Power and Heat When we’re designing these, we look at how much heat you need per millimeter. Most of these run on a 220V-240V circuit. But here’s the catch: if you go for the high-wattage versions, you’ve got to be careful with your voltage. If it’s not regulated, you’ll fry the filament. And please, match your wattage to your reflector’s focal point. If you push too much power without a decent heat shield, you’re just going to warp your housing. Not a great look. What’s Under the Hood We vacuum-seal that carbon filament inside high-purity quartz. It does two things: it keeps the filament from oxidizing and lets the tube expand and contract as it heats up without popping. To make your life easier, we use R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re basically “plug and play” for most industrial heaters. They grip tight, too. That’s important because if the tube vibrates, you get arcs, and arcs snap filaments. Simple as that. The Trade-offs The best part? These things get hot fast. Your customers aren’t standing around shivering while the lamp warms up. But that speed comes with a price. All that intense heat puts a lot of pressure on where the quartz meets the metal. You have to make sure the tube is sitting perfectly square in the socket. If it’s even a little crooked, you’ll get a hot spot that’ll crack the quartz right down the middle. Pro tip: check your contact tension every 1,000 hours. It takes two seconds, but it stops those annoying voltage drops at the terminals.
