
How to Actually Get Your IR Heating Walls Right
When you’re building a custom heating wall for a paint booth, you’re chasing one thing: a perfectly even temperature across the whole chassis. You can’t just throw a grid of IR lamps on a wall and hope for the best. It doesn’t work like that. A low-slung coupe and a high-roof van are completely different animals, and they create different “dead zones” where the heat just doesn’t hit.
Getting the spacing right
To keep those annoying cold spots away, you have to look at the height of the car and the angle the heat is actually traveling. Shortwave IR lamps shoot heat in a tight beam. If you spread them too far apart? You get “zebra stripes” in your paint. But if you cram them too close together, you’ll end up scorching the clear coat on the lower panels. It’s a tightrope walk. I usually handle this by breaking the wall into zones. The bottom zone takes care of the sills and chassis, while the top handles the roof and pillars. Since heat likes to rise, you can just tweak the wattage or the duty cycle of the upper rows to keep things balanced.
The gear and the trade-offs
We stick with quartz-halogen tubes. Why? Because they heat up almost instantly. Nobody wants to spend an hour staring at a wall waiting for the booth to get up to temp. But there’s a catch. High-density arrays pull a massive amount of power. If you load the wall with high-wattage tubes to speed up the cure, make sure your electrical panel and cabling can actually handle it. Otherwise, you’re just waiting for a breaker to trip. And a pro tip: use heat-resistant connectors. The radiation in there is intense, and cheap plastic will melt. I also highly recommend modular brackets. That way, if your vehicle mix changes, you can just slide the lamps up or down without tearing the whole thing apart.
Balancing the heat and the air
Here’s the tricky part. High-output walls heat up the air in the booth fast. You have to find the sweet spot between your IR intensity and your exhaust. If your airflow is too aggressive, it literally strips the heat off the surface before the paint can cure. But if you dial it back too far, you’ve got solvent vapors hanging around, which is a nightmare. It’s all about that balance between the radiant heat and the wind.
