
Getting Your IR Lamp Layout Right for Automotive Heating Walls
When you’re building a custom heating wall for things like paint curing or brake linings, you’re really chasing one thing: a perfectly even soak across the whole chassis. But here’s the thing—you can’t just slap the same setup on a tiny sedan that you’d use for a massive heavy-duty truck. If your vertical lamp spacing is off, you’ll end up with cold spots. And in this business, a cold spot usually means a failed part and a headache for you. Matching the heat to the metal We usually set up the lamps based on how much “thermal mass” we’re dealing with. Think about it: the lower chassis and the wheel assemblies are heavy. They suck up heat. The upper body panels? Not so much. To fix this, we create “zones.” We bunch the lamps closer together in the bottom third of the wall. It compensates for that heavy metal frame acting like a heat sink, making sure the bottom gets just as hot as the top. The balancing act Shortwave IR lamps are great because they heat up fast. Really fast. But they can be aggressive. If you crowd them too tightly, you risk scorching the surface before the core of the part even gets warm. It’s a bit of a trade-off. You can go for a denser array to shave time off your cure, but that puts a lot more stress on your electrical panels and your cooling blowers. Sometimes, slowing down just a bit is the only way to get the quality you need. The gritty details We use industrial quartz tubes with reinforced connectors. Why? Because plants vibrate. If your connections aren’t rock solid, things shake loose, and then you’re troubleshooting a dead lamp in the middle of a shift. Also, make sure your wiring allows you to control those zones independently. It’s a lifesaver. It means you can tweak the wall for a taller vehicle on the fly without having to rip out the hardware and start over. One last tip: check your cooling system. If it can’t handle the total wattage of a full-height wall, your reflectors will warp. Once that happens, your beam angle is shot, and you’re basically just throwing energy into the wind.
