
Getting the Heat Right: How We Set Up IR Lamps for Brake Pad Coating
If you’re coating brake pads, you know the struggle. You need the friction material to bond perfectly, but if you push the heat too hard, you scorch the part. It’s a delicate balance. When we build custom heating walls for these ovens, the biggest question is always: where do the infrared (IR) lamps actually go? You can’t just slap a standard layout into every oven and hope for the best. A compact car pad and a heavy-duty truck liner are two different beasts. They absorb heat differently, and the distance between the lamp and the part changes everything. Matching the heat to the part We start by looking at your product carrier. If your pads are small, we bunch the lamps closer together to really concentrate that heat. But for the big stuff? We widen the gap. If we don’t, you’ll end up with nasty hotspots on the edges. We usually stick with shortwave IR lamps. They’re aggressive—they punch through the coating fast. But here’s the tricky part: the “cold zones.” The top and bottom of the wall always lose heat to the ceiling and floor of the oven. To fix that, we throw in some higher-wattage lamps at the ends. It keeps the temperature steady from top to bottom so you don’t get uneven curing. The hardware side of things You need a mounting frame that doesn’t budge, but also lets you swap lamps out quickly when they blow. We use heavy-duty quartz tubes because they can take a beating in a loud, dirty industrial shop. Just a heads-up, though: those high-wattage shortwave lamps get insanely hot. If you pack them too tight just to speed up your line, you’ve got to make sure your fans and vents can keep up. If you don’t, you’re just waiting for your wiring to melt. How we actually map it out We don’t guess. We calculate exactly how many kilowatts you need per linear meter of the wall. You tell us the dimensions of your parts, and we map out the radiation patterns. The goal is simple: the coating cures evenly across the entire face of the pad. That means you can stop messing with manual repositioning or slowing down your belt just to get the quality right.
