Most shops still rely on those massive convection ovens. You know the ones—giant tunnels that heat up the air, hoping that heat eventually makes its way into the coating. It’s slow. It’s clunky. And honestly, it’s a waste of energy and precious floor space. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared (IR) emitters. Instead of heating the air around the part, IR goes straight through the coating and hits the substrate and the film at the same time. It’s a completely different way of moving heat. Shrinking the footprint When you switch to high-wattage IR lamps, your tunnel doesn’t need to be a mile long. You aren’t waiting for a slow crawl through a hot breeze anymore. IR delivers concentrated energy. It forces solvents to evaporate and polymers to cross-link way faster. You get the exact same cure, but in a fraction of the distance. That means you get your floor space back, and you can push way more parts through the line every hour. How it actually works We use quartz-halogen emitters for these systems. The best part? They hit their target temperature in seconds. There’s no sitting around waiting for the oven to “warm up.” You can even sync the power to your line speed. If the conveyor slows down, you just dim the lamps. Simple. It keeps you from scorching the parts. One thing to watch out for: reflectors. Because these tubes are so intense, you can’t just let the heat wander. We use gold or polished aluminum to bounce that radiation right back onto the pads. If you skip the reflectors, you’re basically paying to heat your ceiling, losing about 30% of your energy. The trade-offs Now, this isn’t a “set it and forget it” magic fix. If you crank the heat too high, you run into “skinning.” That’s when the surface dries instantly, trapping solvents underneath. You’ll end up with bubbles or peeling, which is a nightmare. You have to find that sweet spot between lamp intensity and conveyor speed. Also, these lamps get hot. Really hot. Make sure your cooling fans are spec’d correctly for the housings, or you’ll be replacing burnt-out sockets more often than you’d like.
