
Stop the Squeal: Why Deep Heating Matters for Brake Pads
Nobody likes a squeaky brake. It’s annoying, and it usually means something went wrong during production. Most of the time, that high-pitched noise comes down to uneven curing. If the friction material doesn’t set the same way throughout the pad, you end up with internal stress and weird density spots. When you hit the brakes, those spots vibrate. That’s your squeal. The problem is that surface heating just doesn’t cut it. You can’t just toast the outside and hope for the best; you need the heat to actually hit the core. Getting inside the material This is where shortwave infrared (IR) lamps come in. They don’t work like those big convection ovens that just heat up the air and wait for it to soak in. Instead, IR radiation dives straight into the material. It triggers what we call a volumetric cure. Basically, the heat generates inside the pad. The center gets up to temperature at the same time as the surface, so everything sets evenly. The gear that makes it happen To get that kind of heat density, we use lamps with high wattage per millimeter. We go with quartz glass tubes and halogen filaments because they’re incredibly fast. You aren’t standing around for an hour waiting for an oven to preheat. You flip a switch, and you’re at full power in seconds. It’s a huge time-saver. We also stick to R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because they keep the wiring simple. If a tube pops on the line, you can swap it out in a couple of minutes and get back to work without having to rewire the whole rack. The reality check Now, it’s not all magic. High-intensity IR curing is fast, but it’s a power hog. If you’re running a bank of 2000W lamps, your cabling and power supply need to be beefy enough to handle the peak current. If they aren’t, you’ll deal with voltage drops. And you have to be careful with your conveyor speed. It’s a balancing act. Move the pads too slowly, and you’ll scorch the resin. Move them too fast, and you’re right back to uneven curing and angry customers complaining about noise. Get the speed dialed in, though, and the results speak for themselves.
