
Stopping Brake Squeal Before It Starts
Ever wonder why some brake pads just won’t stop screaming? For a lot of shops, the problem actually starts in the curing oven. When you use a standard convection oven, you’re basically baking the pad from the outside in. The surface gets hit with heat first, which often means the outside is overdone by the time the core finally catches up. This leaves you with uneven density and internal stress. Once those pads hit the road, that inconsistency turns into vibration. And vibration is exactly what causes that annoying squeal. The trick is using short-wave infrared (IR). Unlike hot air, IR doesn’t just sit on the surface. It punches right through the friction material. This means the center of the pad heats up at pretty much the same rate as the outside. You get a uniform cure from the inside out, which basically kills the root cause of the noise. But you can’t just plug in a lamp and call it a day. Getting the heat density right is the tricky part. We usually go with high-wattage quartz lamps because you need enough energy to get through those dense metallic and organic compounds. You also have to play a balancing act between your lamp temperature and the conveyor speed. If you crank the heat but keep the belt moving too slowly, you’ll scorch the resin binders on the surface. Not a good look. Then there’s the actual setup on the floor. You need a rock-solid power supply. If your power flickers, your temperatures swing, and your curing cycle is ruined. And please, don’t skimp on the cooling fans for the lamp housings. These IR arrays put out a massive amount of ambient heat—enough to melt your control wiring if you don’t keep the air moving. One last tip: watch your lamp placement. If you just line them up in a straight row, you might get “striping” on the pads. We prefer a staggered layout. It gets rid of the cold spots and ensures every single millimeter of the material hits the target temperature. The result? A stable, quiet part that doesn’t make the customer want to pull their hair out.
