
Stop Scorching Your Paper: A Better Way to Dry
If you’ve ever dealt with high-speed paper drying, you know the struggle. You’re trying to get the moisture out fast, but it’s a balancing act. Too much heat and you’ve got scorched edges. Too little, and your throughput tanks. That’s why we built these carbon fiber infrared lamps. We combined carbon fiber heating elements with ruby and gold coatings to hit a sweet spot. Instead of just blasting the surface, these lamps target the moisture hiding inside the paper. The secret is in the materials. Most people are used to tungsten wires, but carbon fiber is a different beast. It gives us a much larger emitting surface. This means the power is spread out more evenly, so you aren’t risking a burnout every time you cycle the power. Then we add the ruby-quartz glass. Think of it as a filter. It blocks the short-wave radiation that usually fries the surface of the paper on contact. Instead, it pushes the heat deeper into the fibers. It’s the difference between searing a steak and slow-roasting it. And about that gold coating… You’ll notice some of these have a “half gold” or clear gold finish. That’s not for looks. Gold is a mirror for IR energy. It bounces the heat back down toward the paper rather than letting it leak into your machine frame. It’s efficient. But a quick heads-up: because that gold reflects so much heat, the tube surface gets hotter. If you’re packing these into a tight array, just make sure your ventilation is up to the task. You don’t want your lamp housing warping because the air can’t move. Avoiding the “Skinning” Trap The biggest headache in paper drying is “skinning.” That’s when the outside dries instantly, creating a hard shell that traps wetness inside. It’s frustrating and ruins the product. Our ruby-clear setup fixes this. It delivers a steady, medium-wave output that actually penetrates the sheet. Getting them started is easy. They fit into most standard IR fixtures. Just double-check your voltage and wattage before you flip the switch. One last tip: don’t over-spec your wattage if your conveyor is moving slowly. If the paper sits under too much power for too long, it’ll burn. Just match your line speed to the lamp’s output, and you’ll hit that perfect moisture percentage every time.
