
Stop Wasting Floor Space on Your Curing Tunnels
If you’re using traditional convection ovens for brake pad coatings, you know the struggle. You end up with these massive, sprawling tunnels just to make sure the center of the material actually hits the right temperature. It’s a lot of wasted space. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (IR) emitters. Instead of blowing hot air around and hoping for the best, IR radiation goes straight through the coating. It heats the material from the inside out. It’s faster. Much faster. And that changes everything for your workflow.
Why Shortwave IR Actually Works
Here’s the thing: shortwave emitters run hot. They put out radiation in a spectrum that friction materials just soak up. Because the heat penetrates so quickly, you can seriously shrink your tunnel length. If your current line is lagging and the coating isn’t drying fast enough, switching to high-density IR lamps cuts down the time parts need to spend in the oven. You get more parts out the door every hour, and you don’t have to knock down a wall to expand your factory floor.
Getting the Power Right
To get the temperature profiles you need, we use lamps with a high wattage-per-centimeter ratio. That concentration of energy is where the speed comes from. But a word of caution: make sure your wiring and power supply can handle the hit. When these things ramp up, there’s a sudden draw of current that can trip a weak system. We stick with quartz envelopes because they can take the heat. Industrial environments are brutal, and quartz keeps the filament from oxidizing and dying early. If you’re swapping these into an old rig, double-check your connectors. R7s or Sk15 bases are the standard, but if the fit is loose, you’ll get arcing. That’s a fast track to a burnt-out lamp.
The Trade-offs
Now, shortwave IR is intense. If your conveyor is moving too slowly, you’ll scorch the surface of the brake pad before the core even gets warm. It’s a balancing act between your lamp wattage and your line speed. Plus, don’t forget the end of the line. Your cooling zones have to be up to the task. You need to lock in that cure before the parts even touch the packing station, or you’re undoing all that hard work.
