
Getting Your Brake Pad Curing Walls Just Right
Curing brake pad coatings is a bit of a balancing act. You need enough heat to make sure that coating actually sticks, but not so much that you scorch the friction material. To get this right, we use customized heating walls with shortwave infrared lamps. The tricky part? Every vehicle is different. A tiny brake pad for a city car doesn’t hold heat the same way a massive pad for a heavy-duty truck does. You can’t just use a one-size-fits-all approach.
Mapping Out the Heat
If you just throw a uniform grid of lamps at the problem, you’re going to have a bad time. Space them too far apart? You get cold spots. Pack them too tight? The middle of the pad burns while the edges are still wet. It’s frustrating and wastes parts. Instead, we play around with the spacing—the “pitch”—between the quartz tubes. We basically build a thermal map. For those larger pads, we pack more lamps at the top and bottom edges. Why? Because heat loves to leak out of the edges. By beefing up the ends, we make sure the whole surface hits the right temperature at the exact same time.
The Trade-offs
Shortwave lamps are great because they pump out a ton of energy, which means your parts move through the line faster. But there’s a catch. That kind of power puts a real strain on your electrical supply. We usually spec these systems for high wattage so you don’t lose that speed. And here is something to watch out for: more lamps mean more ambient heat inside the chamber. If you’re packing the wall tight for small parts, your ventilation has to be top-notch. If you can’t pull that excess heat out, you’ll end up warping or damaging your reflectors.
Keeping Things Running
Nobody wants to tear down an entire heating wall just because one bulb popped. That’s why we use standardized connectors. If a tube goes out, you just pop it out and drop a new one in. Simple. One last tip: keep your mirrors clean. Seriously. Give those reflectors a wipe-down every month. When dust builds up on the mirrors, your efficiency tanks. Your lamps have to run hotter and harder just to do the same job, which wears them out way faster than they should.
