
Getting the Heat Right: The Trick to Curing Brake Linings
If you’ve ever dealt with brake lining curing, you know the struggle. You have to ramp up the temperature just right to get those resins to bond. If you rush it or get the heat wrong, you end up with trapped gases, internal holes, or—worst of all—thermal cracking. Basically, if the outside of the pad cooks before the inside does, you’re in trouble. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. They don’t just hit the surface; they actually get deep into the material. Why IR makes a difference Standard convection heat is kind of like a blowdryer—it hits the surface and stays there. That leads to the “skin effect,” where the outside is over-cured and cracking while the center is still raw. Shortwave IR is different. It penetrates deeper. The secret is balancing your wattage with the distance between the lamp and the part. Get it right, and you get a consistent bake across the whole tray. Get it wrong, and you’ll create hot spots that literally burn the resin right out of the pad. The Gear That Actually Lasts We don’t use standard glass for our lamps. We use high-purity quartz tubes. Why? Because quartz can handle the shock of rapid heating and cooling without shattering. We also pay a lot of attention to the voltage and wattage pairings. If your power supply is shaky, your cure cycle drifts. And when the cycle drifts, your scrap pile grows because of those annoying structural voids. It’s a headache you just don’t need. Setting It Up (And the Trade-offs) When you’re wiring these into your oven, don’t cut corners. Use heat-resistant cabling and rock-solid connectors. If you don’t, you’re asking for an arc-over once things get hot. Now, here is the catch: high-wattage IR tubes put out a lot of radiant heat. It’s great for speeding up your cycle, but it beats up your oven’s chassis. If you don’t have the right cooling fans and ventilation, that ambient heat will build up and eventually warp your oven frame. The best way to handle this is through zoning. By tweaking the heat in different sections, you can make sure every single pad cures evenly from one end to the other. Simple, but it makes all the difference.
