
How to Actually Stop Brake Squeal (Using IR Heating)
Nobody likes that high-pitched scream from a set of brakes. Most of the time, it happens because the resin in the friction material didn’t cure evenly. Here is what’s actually happening: the surface hardens too fast, trapping wet, uncured resin inside the core. That creates internal stress and weird density gaps. It’s a mess. To fix it, we use shortwave infrared (IR) curing lamps to stop the problem before the pads even leave the shop. The trick is getting the heat deep inside. If you use a standard convection oven, you’re just heating the outside. You get this “skin effect” where the surface is overcooked but the middle is still soft. IR lamps are different. They use specific wavelengths that dive deep into the material. The energy turns into heat right inside the resin matrix. Instead of a burnt crust and a raw center, you get a steady, uniform temperature from the surface all the way down to the backing plate. Let’s talk power. We go with high-wattage lamps because we want a fast ramp-up. You need a lot of heat density to trigger that chemical cross-linking without letting the pads sit in a kiln for hours. But you have to be smart about it. Match your voltage and wattage to the actual mass of the pads you’re curing. A beefier tube cuts your cycle time way down, but it puts a lot more stress on your electrical leads. Do yourself a favor and use high-temperature cabling. Otherwise, you’re just waiting for your insulation to melt. A few things to watch out for. IR heating is fast, but it only works if the lamp can “see” the part. It’s directional. If you stack your pads too tight or get the angle wrong, you’ll end up with cold spots. I recommend a staggered layout. Give every single pad a direct line of sight to the emitter. And remember: these things get hot. Really hot. Make sure your housing has a good fan or plenty of ventilation, or your reflectors will start warping. When the heat is consistent, the friction is consistent. And that’s how you kill the noise for good.
